AVG is well known for their Free AVG Antivirus program. The AVG
Rescue CD is a standalone set of tools that can be started from CD or
USB flash disk. It can be used to recover computers that are not able to
boot or are infected in a way that will not allow normal operation. The
whole CD or USB flash drive is a live CD with Linux operating system
and AVG preinstalled on it.
When I need to clean an infected computer without Windows starting,
the AVG Rescue CD for USB stick is one of my favorite. Below is how to
create an AVG bootable Rescue USB flash drive.
1. Visit http://www.avg.com/us-en/avg-rescue-cd and download AVG Rescue CD. To create the bootable USB disk, we need to download the RAR or ZIP archive.
2. Unpack the rar or zip archive to your preferred location.
3. Go to the folder you save the unpacked files. On Windows OS, open the README file with Notepad.
4. Insert a USB device (flash disk) into any one of the USB drives on your computer. AVG Rescue CD for USB requires about 510MB free space on the USB drive.
5. Although AVG says that you do not need to backup files on your USB flash disk, we still suggest you do a backup before the installation.
6. Find and double click the file named “setup.exe”. It will guide you through the whole process.
After creating a bootable USB rescue disk, you can test your bootable AVG Rescue USB flash disk with these steps:
1. Insert the AVG Rescue USB flash drive.
2. Restart your computer and go to the boot menu in BIOS settings.
3. Select Removable devices (USB) as the source you want to boot from.
4. The AVG Rescue CD boot screen will be displayed.
5. Press Enter to start loading the DOS AVG AntiVirus using Linux.
6. The system will boot up. It will automatically mount (make available) the hard drives of the computer and also set the network connection.
7. Skip the update if your computer can’t connect to the Internet.
8. Use the arrow keys and the Enter key to highlight the Scan option.
9. Specify whether you want to scan the whole disk or just specified directory. Then you can start scan your hard drive for viruses and malware and other purpose.
AVG Rescue CD is free for download. Please keep in mind that not every PC can boot from a USB flash drive. If you can’t use your bootable rescue USB flash disk to start your PC, we recommend you try the ISO version of the AVG rescue CD, which should boot any PC with an optical drive
