Jabber.org is the original IM service based on XMPP, the open
standard for instant messaging, and one of the biggest nodes on the open
XMPP network. Create an account by visiting register.jabber.org or one
of the other public XMPP services, then download a free client, log in,
and start chatting! Hopefully this tutorial will make it easier for you
to sign up and start using jabber.
1.) Download and install Pidgin from HERE, for Mac use Adium, you can download it from HERE.
2.a) For popular Jabber.org accounts, go to Jabber.org and enter desired username and password, that’s all. Then go to Accounts > Manage Accounts > Add. For account type select “XMPP”, use your registered username, and domain is jabber.org.

2.b) For jabber.ccc.de account, go to Accounts > Manage Accounts > Add, for account type select “XMPP”, pick desired username, and domain is jabber.ccc.de, check “[x] Create this new account on the server” and click Add. This will create new account without visiting any web page. CCC.de accounts will expire in 12 months, if not used, which can be a good thing.
3.) Optional BUT recommended, for greater security, download and install OTR from HERE. Before installing exit Pidgin, then go to Tools > Plugins and enable it. With OTR all chat is encrypted and very secure. Initial key generation may take few seconds, just wait until it finishes. Mac Adium supports OTR by default and doesn’t require any installation.
You can add me 9001_faps@jabber.ccc.de or let me know about your username@server, and i will add you. After that you need to authorize me and we can chat! It also supports chat rooms. :)
