installing Ubuntu Linux on 32-bit UEFI machines

This is a newbies guide, and kind of verbose.

The prep was done on macOS, but I’ll try and help out for Windows systems.

The reference machine is a Lenovo 100S (100S-11IBY)

Prerequisites

Linux choice, and some notes on compatibility.

Just get ubuntu.

There will be issues, often fatal.

Don’t do this on your main computer!

You could also just use a VM, Container or the Cloud!

A summary of the process

Building a USB installer.

Download the ISO

Format your USB stick

Creating a bootable USB

Adding the 32-Bit EFI file.

Setting up your BIOS for the install.

A Warning

The process

Booting to the live desktop.

Testing things out.

Doing the install

A Final Warning — at this step, we really start breaking stuff.

Installing Ubuntu

The grub installer failure

Finding some critical information before moving on

Fixing your new installation, and, what’s GRUB?

Startup using the USB disk and hack grub.

Tidying up grub once you’re in your real Ubuntu

Update Apt.

Fix up GRUB install.

Voila!

Addendum — Reinstalling windows.
