Jailbreak iOS 9, 9.0.1, 9.0.2 on a Mac

Team Pangu delivered the untethered iOS 9 jailbreak for windows and now they’ve followed up with a tool that runs on your Mac as well. Here’s a tutorial on how to jailbreak iOS 9 without any kind of virtual machine or other tricks, directly via Mac OS X. The current jailbreak works up to iOS 9.0.2, later versions have to be downgraded if possible or are not jailbreakable at the moment.
These iPhone models are compatible: iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPad Air 2, iPad Air, iPad 4, iPad 3, iPad 2, iPad mini 4, iPad mini 3, iPad mini 2, iPad mini, iPod touch 6G, iPod touch 5G
Prerequisites for the iOS 9 Jailbreak:
  • iOS 9.0, iOS 9.0.1 or iOS 9.0.2 on a supported iPhone, iPad or iPod touch
  • Access to a Mac computer
  • A recent iCloud or iTunes backup of your device

How to jailbreak iOS 9 on a mac

First of all, we will have to prepare your device for the jailbreak. Do you still need to back up your data? Then check out our guide on fully backing up your iPhone and restoring your backups afterwards. We definitely recommend creating a backup first before you follow any other steps.
How to prepare your iPhone for the iOS 9 jailbreak:
  • Disable the following features:
    • Find My iPhone (Settings > iCloud > Find my iPhone)
    • Passcode (Settings > Passcode)
  • Enable the following features:
    • Airplane Mode (Settings > Airplane Mode)

Next up, you will have to download the Pangu jailbreak tool from the official website of the Pangu Jailbreak Team:
Then connect your iPhone to your Mac via the USB cable. Run the Pangu 9 tool we just downloaded in the previous step and confirm that you would like to open it, regardless of whether your Mac prompts about it being from an unidentified developer. See the below screenshot for reference:

The jailbreak tool should recognize your device within seconds and allow you to initiate the procedure via the “Start” button. Next, click “Already backup” to begin. From now on, only touch your device when prompted and leave the iPhone to do its thing.

Keep following the directions on your Mac. The progress bar should continue until about 55% and then your iPhone will reboot. At 65% the tool will ask you to unlock your iPhone and enable Airplane mode once more.

Next up, at 75%, you will have to unlock the iPhone one last time and open up the Pangu app, as per the instructions. But wait. We recommend launching the “Photos” app first, exiting via the Home Button and then launching the temporary “Pangu” app to complete the jailbreak. It will ask for permission to access your photos, which you need to confirm for technical reasons only. The exploit makes use of the “Photos” app, but ignores your data, so don’t worry about it.
The iPhone will reboot one last time and you will be done with the jailbreak, congratulations! Now you just need to disable airplane mode to regain a working internet connection and run the Cydia app for the first time. Cydia will display “preparing filesystem” for a while, please be patient and keep the app running until it quits itself or reboots your iPhone. After that, you are completely done!
